Having a solid and efficient access control system is a fundamental part of the security and protection of a site’s assets and people. For this reason, the LPR license plate recognition provides an easy-to-use solution that fits the needs of any site, parking lot, toll booth, building, retail location and much more.
In the following use case we will show how we implemented our license plate recognition (LPR) solution in the cloud for the for the parking lot of a shopping mall in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia.
Client needs
Previously, the on-site parking system had a solution that required an on-site supervisor in charge of monitoring of the vehicles, and delivery tickets for the entry and exit of vehicles.
The parking lot had the need to implement a system that did not require a person monitoring. Since this operator would be assigned to carry out other tasks of higher priority.
In addition, the use of entrance tickets was of little use, since being a free parking lot, it was not necessary to use this type of solution.
Vehicle license plate recognition solution presented
Our License Plate Recognition (LPR) solution has been integrated into the cloud through Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The entrances and exits of the cars to the establishment were optimized, through the complete traceability of the cars by recording dates and times of access, video evidence, image and vehicle license plate information.
Also, the ability to create white/black lists of vehicles or visitors entering the site was made available to them; generating alerts to the platform and via Telegram, every time a car entered with a license plate registered in one of the previously created lists.
With Alice LPR system or License Plate Recognition, an ease of implementation was provided, since the solution was deployed in low-cost Hikvision varifocal cameras. In these, we integrated our video analysis technology and character recognition OCR for plate detection.
Finally, a system of counters was implemented to count the number of vehicles moving around. Providing the possibility of generating reports of all income and output.
Characteristics of the vehicle license plate reading solution
Being a completely cloud solution, the hardware requirements were not high. To deploy the solution we used:
- 2 Hikvision 2 mega pixel varifocal cameras located at the entrance and exit of the parking lot.
- 2 Alice LPR licenses one for each camera.
- 1 Alice Box relay connected to the Internet for on-site platform display and content relay to the cloud on Amazon Web Services AWS.
- 1 computer with monitor to visualize the platform in the monitoring center.
Conclusion
- A system with low-cost cameras capable of recognizing and registering vehicle license plates in real time, with high precision, was implemented.
- It was changed from a supervised system to a completely autonomous one that did not require an operator located at the entrance and exit site of the establishment.
- A cloud system (AWS) was deployed that allows you to view all the content generated by the Alice platform through any site or device.
